'Chromies' Give California Chrome Final Sendoff At Los Alamitos

Horse of the Year finalist California Chrome left his home at Los Alamitos race course for the last time on Friday morning, heading east to Gulfstream Park in Florida to prepare for the inaugural running of the $12-million Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 28.

Art Sherman, who trains the 6-year-old California-bred son of Lucky Pulpit for California Chrome LLC (a partnership of co-breeder Perry Martin and a syndicate from Taylor Made Farm), said the plane taking Chrome to Miami was originally scheduled to stop in Dallas but will instead refuel in El Paso because of weather problems.

Following the Pegasus World Cup, California Chrome will enter stud at Taylor Made in Nicholasville, Ky., as the leading money winner in North American Thoroughbred racing history. He's won 15 of 25 starts, with four seconds and one third, for earnings of $14,452,650.
